Summer Dance: Where do I go? What to look for?

Ok you’ve made the decision to participate in a Summer Dance Program, but how to find the right program? Online Camp guides, internet search? Sometimes, it can be like finding… that missing dance shoe.

First, I recommend defining your goals. What do you hope that your child will get out of the summer program? Are you looking to develop technique, try a new style, performance opportunities? Perhaps you’re trying on a new studio or working on developing those valuable social skills. Thinking about your goals will allow you to evaluate the programs you’re researching.

So, you’ve done your internet search, or asked on the local Facebook page. You now have an endless list of recommendations from complete strangers. Since their goals may not be the same as yours, I suggest one more step. Create a list of questions to ask that align with your goals. Call the studios on the top of your list. Ask to take a tour of the studio and meet with staff. Check out the studio profile. What are the teachers’ dance education or professional experience? Are the teachers CORI-ed? Is the studio equipped with a sprung dance floor (No student should be dancing on floor put directly on cement)? What is the studio’s viewing policy? When is the studio office opened should you have questions? Do they offer an online payment system? Are there performance opportunities? What is the Make-up Policy for missed classes? How many students are in a class? Does the studio hold to a modest costume policy? What is the cancellation policy should your child decide this activity is not for them?

Most importantly the dance program you select should meet your goals. The summer dance program should be a fun and challenging experience providing many happy memories. Your dancer should grow from the experience. When you and the family are reflecting back over summer activities at the last evening cookout before school starts, your summer dance choice should stand out as a great summer experience. Happy Dancing!
